The X-Men, on the search for Nightcrawler, find themselves separated! Wolverine and Northstar are mysteriously in... heaven?! But where does that leave the rest of the team?

There was a lot of comment when the X-Men turned ‘cosmic’ and wandered off into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Shi’ar that they were moving away from their ‘roots;’ which at the time were being a metaphor for racism and homophobia. Well I wonder if we have moved past that enough now that the X-Men going to Hell (literally) is considered acceptable by the reading public. I am not a massively religious person myself, so there are no moral issues for me with this comic, but obviously I can see that this might hold a few problems for people with that particular leaning.

Even without a personal religious skew to influence my opinion of this comic, I do still find it rather a difficult concept that Heaven and Hell are physical places that living, breathing heroes can simply appear in, or more importantly, exist in. I would not be so bothered if this was a Doctor Strange comic, or even if it was Magik who was the X-Man involved as they specifically deal with this sort of concept all the time, but I think I can understand people’s issues way back when the X-Men decided to take a jaunt into space for the first time.

The story itself is quite simple, with the X-Men transported into two groups, one in Hell, the other in Heaven and they arrive at the moment that Hell has launched an attack using flying pirate ships. With some of their powers not working right in the alien environment it is a struggle for them to survive and while they are thinking of rescuing or at least finding Nightcrawler, it looks like he might have to save them instead.

I know I said I am not religious, but I have been brought up in a Christian country with a decent amount of religious education classes at school. This has left me with a concept of heaven and hell in my head, which even if I do not necessarily believe it, does make this book rather hard to swallow. It might have been better from my perspective had they have simply called them a ‘demonic world’ and ‘a higher plane’ simply to detach them slightly from people preconceived ideas. Sure people could then draw their own parallels, but it would not be so intrinsically linked with Christianity. The idea that a bunch of devils can saunter into heaven and walk off with the souls of innocent good people is deeply disturbing, far more so than innocent people merely dying on earth because it breaks that inviolable rule good people will eventually get what is coming to them after they die.

I do really like this comic and I like where it is going, but the sooner it gets there the better because I do not like the place in which it is set. The art is glorious and the writing is strong and I might even get to like Nightcrawler by the end of it, but not until they get out of Heaven.
