This is a story about my service as a radioman aboard an unusual US Navy ship. We sailed in a volatile part of the world of vital importance to the US and its allies as the primary source of the oil needed to fuel their economies. The ship was the USS LaSalle (AGF-3), a converted amphibious landing ship. The place and time were the Middle East of 1975 to 1978, a time when regional wars were either raging or festering and about to erupt. LaSalle was on War Watch -- the eyes and ears of America in the region.

A good yarn about the adventurous author's life on one of Mr Henson's assignments in the U.S. Navy. I was also in the navy many years ago and his pleasant writhing style reminds me of many thing I also experienced in the navy. He has thrown a just the right amount of technical jargon to tie together his fun adventures.I am looking forward to reading Mr Henson's next adventure book.

Genuine, heartfelt and suthentic, reflecting the high caliber character of our fighting men and women in war and peace. Herb's other books are also windows into the best of human spirit, integrity and red-blooded patriotic courage - BRAVO ZULU, Herb!
I was on the LaSalle in the mid eighties when Iran and Iraq were at war. Much of SCPO Henson' s story was the same as mine. The Saudis would not let enlisteds off the ship and Kuwait wouldn't even grant us a port call when we were ensuring their oil exports. The Gulf was a different place then.
I did leave the LaSalle with a wonderful souvenir my wife of thirty plus years. Several men from Adminsupu Bahrain left with Philippine wives too.
An absorbing read. Herb Henson offers insight into the technical and everyday routines of a command
Ship (with a distinguished Admiral embarked) operating when tensions were high in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea
And the general Indian Ocean regions. Mr Henson has a wealth of experience - he saw active duty in the
Marine Corps and as a Green Beret in combat operations during the Vietnam war (his book "Night Signals" is
Highly recommended). War Watch provides a personal feel and a Sailor's perspective regarding the interactions
Of enlisted men and officers. Mr. Henson's insights and memories provide a fine and informative outline of a
Pivotal time in our MIDEAST operations.
I very much enjoyed the book. As a sailor myself years ago, and a Ham radio operator, it made for a good read.
